The Nikon D7000 is right now the #1 selling DSLR on Amazon:

    It will ship mid-October.

The D7000 looks like a great competitor to the Canon T2i in the consumer bracket, though the pricing is pretty high for a body in the XXXX line.

Interesting to see the Amazon top 10 is an even split of 5 Nikon bodies and 5 Canon bodies. (Though still not sure how the #1 bestseller isn’t actually for sale yet!)

Interesting DSLR – priced the same as the D90 was, and still categorized as a consumer-level camera but has features from the higher end pro cameras – weather sealing, metal body, 1/8000 second shutter speed, more AF points, ISO to 25,600 etc. And no increase in price for all this.

Canon has forced Nikon to step up its game. Now it’s time for the real world tests next month – hopefully the D7000 will deliver.

Seems to be trying to take a consumer sized body style and pitch it against the ‘pro-sumer’ 60D (which it rivals in specs and price)

Rare to see a consumer sized body in this price/feature bracket. Will be interesting to see how it fares.

In a rather weird turn of events, the D3000 is now at the top of the Amazon bestseller charts.

Looks like the target market is rushing to buy the more-than-adequate older model at almost a third of the price!

That might be a bad sign. Consumers don’t tend to care about ISO expansion and metal bodies if they push the price tag up as much as this release has.

Nikon usually gives Chase Jarvis new cameras to test them out. Here are some of the work he did with the Nikon D7000

On DXOMark, the D7000 sensor is in a TIE with the D700 sensor – better even than the Canon 5D Mk II.

    Awesome!

Technical specs do not a photographer make – a good photographer can shoot a far more compelling image with a homemade pinhole camera, than can a bad photographer with the most technically perfect equipment.

Having said that – kudos to Nikon – they really do seem to be pushing hard at the moment.

I definitely need some help in this decision making:
I am finally upgrading my camera (took a little time to save the $$) and have been planing to go from the old, outdated D40 to the D300S. No problem here, until i see the new D7000 with its new sensor and its 16mp!
I do not plan to buy another camera so soon and want to start actively printing and framing my images.
I am torn: do I buy the D300S or the D7000??? I do not want to wait months for a possible newer version of D300S or the illusive D400, which will be way off my budget.
    Help!

    Hi Ana,

At the end of the day:

    - the body is less important than the lenses attached to it
    - the lenses are less important than the eye *behind* the body & lens.

It’s doubtful you’ll outgrow either body for a long time, so getting hung up on minor technical specs which won’t affect anything you do with the camera is wasted energy!

A good lab can make awesome prints form a 5mp camera. If you’re a ‘spray and pray’ shooter, who needs the fastest burst rate possible to shoot hundreds of images in the hope one might be ok, then the 300s edges it.

Otherwise, it’s all just minor tech changes – the more time you spend umm-ing and ahhh-ing over them, the less time your spending making images!
